EXPERIMENT #1
For these experiment we were given a set of instructions to guide us on how to photograph a photograph. These instructions included but were not limited to:
> photograph the photograph inside a book
> photograph the photograph so that the light is obscuring it
> photograph the photograph being destroyed
The photographs we chose to photograph were from the book "evidence", a book where photographs from company archive are taken and compiled into a book without caption or conthttps://images.app.goo.gl/fpA2eDpPj8DqUy9i6ext.I believe they've done it without caption or context to feed into the the the peculiar style of them and the curious charter of humans . This forces the viewer to create their own reality of what is happening in each photo. These instructions were influences by a variety of different photographers.
Jiro Takamatsu hired a photographer to take a photo of their family photo being distorted by the light, this influenced the instruction "take a photograph so that the light is obscuring the photograph".

From this project I've identified how "all images are excessive and enigmatic". This is because the camera captures way too much than is every wanted whilst everything is never truly clear and everyone can interrupt the same photo wildly differently, giving it a sense of mystery to what its real meaning is. This leads us to believe if any evidence is every truly completely reliable. How can we ever believe photos are untampered with and a accurate representation of life? Why do we allow photographic evidence to sentence people to death ,set people free and just overall decide peoples fate when they can be so easily manipulated and staged.
This is my favourite photo for several reasons. I particularly like how the tap and water appear slightly blurred as they flow. I'm drawn to the way the water gathers on the surface, creating a captivating pattern on the paper. I also find it quite enjoyable how the silhouette of the tap mirrors that of the hand holding the rope.
Experiment #2
In the second experiment we scrambled everyones favourite pictures and redistributed them between 4 groups of 3. The challenge was to create a pattern that linked the photograph before and after. Our group mainly focused on colour scheme and lines to link the pictures together. The themes that we used to connect the images were:
>vertical lines, we even turned some images so that the lines were going in the correct direction which made it more coherent
>colour pallet, a regular black white and different red and purples were identified to be the main colours within the images
>mechanical appearance, repeating pattern of sites or complex looking structures

From this I've learnt how pairing images changes the meaning of both images , adds contrast and a deeper theme not noticeable at first glance . This experiment has taught me to analyse how photos are presented next to each other and how that is also a very carefully curated decision by the photographer for various different reasons .

>beyond evidence looks at the difficulty artists face whilst trying to tell stories and narratives
>evidence connotes truth telling and purity however it can be controversial as many photographers believe no photos are "true" so much so that some photographers have focused on deception in some of their works >decontextualizing photos and re-contextualizing by creating a sequence became especially inspiring as it gave the photos new poetic functions greater than their intended purpose >there are limitations to accurately translating a narrative into solely images and there are artists that use both text and photography to convey their story more effectively and clearly >the ideal that the viewer is also a collaborator on the art is a controversial and not particularly like opinion however it is fact that many people seeing a singular piece of work cannot all have the same opinion |
he grey area reflects the area between fact and fiction and how photography can be less trust worthy now rather then when it was first invested. This can become an issue for those that are documentary photographers because how can you be certain that the photos we are seeing are actually conveying the truth. Photos can be tampered with in so many different ways and as technology advances the list in ways it can be changed only increases. But photos are unreliable in so many other way exceeding just editing, photographers can pose, stage and change what they photograph and how. This could create documentary uncertainty where although the creator is trying their best to create factual, undeniable truth , is that actually possible and how close can they get? However, some people exploit this grey area instead of allowing it to torment them and take advantage of this strange space in photography ,for example Jack Latham. This grey area creates a space within photography that he explore is surreal, uncanny and eerie.

Our focus today was creating a story that was "in the grey area".We had the challenge to capture a false reality within our photography. Rhianna and I exploited the empty school and created a narrative of an abandoned school after a war.We explored the school in search of the most littered and empty spaces to showcase the most unusually desolate and polluted areas. We focused on zooming in when sequencing our images ,this way it feels like you’re exploring around the school and heading towards a specific point. This adds to the perspective that you are discovering an abandoned school that somewhat survived the war.The colour pallet was also a deliberate choice it made it seem that it was an older, documentary photograph in somewhere such as a history textbook. Also we took the "grey area" literal and decided it would add to the theme. The final important choice that we made was to me the title "after the explosion" in Japanese due to the historical bombing in Japan Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This added an extra layer of information and depth into which would be hard to communicate otherwise and also makes a level of mystery the viewer has to uncover and research to fully understand the piece.

Escape is a fictional story that I created with photography. The story starts in a mysterious, dark, gloomy place which is meant to create anxiety within the viewer. The travel pictures are slowly becoming more isolated which is showing how people let how of emotional baggage as they ,finally, arrive at 'paradise' which was symbolic. It could represents how multiple things however I specifically wanted it to mirror the fight with mental health.
This mirrors the struggle many have with mental health as it depicts the confusing headspace a lot of people face, a confusing maze that seems impossible to escape. However, as you slowly start putting the hard work to improve your mental state things start getting clearer. The image on the bus breaks the pattern as its taken from a security camera on the bus , the quality is much worse and its not as clear .This was intentional and is meant to be indicative of people looking into your progress but not being able to monitor or understand what you've overcome as well as you have. This is why I chose to make it from a low quality security camera, a thing made for monitoring however can be quite confusing at times due to the low quality. The final picture is meant to depict 'paradise' which essentially is when you've reached a comfortable space in your mental health where you can be at ease a lot easier. |
lost

"Lost" is a factual story, the story start and ends in the same place however at different times and at different perspectives. This is story based on an event that was overall unimportant and irrelevant but i choose to present it in a strange way. In every picture i tried to convey the opposite emotion felt.
>the first one shows a very cramped and almost an anxiety inducing picture as its mostly empty and then you just see the overcrowded bus on the bottom deck whilst in the security camera that can somewhat be seen you can see someone sitting alone on the top deck which causes confusion as to why everyone has chosen to stay in a swarmed, tight place but in the actual moment i was overjoyed and ecstatic >the second picture in my opinion has a quite calm and tranquil atmosphere which all the organised boxed of loose crystals and statues and bigger orbes whilst in reality i was in the moment very electrified and intoxicated with all of the feelings of the crystals and the beauty they all held >the 3rd image is my favourite because its as far away from my original emotion as possible as the original emotions were panic and distress however the photo is rather angelic and fairy tale like >the last image looks quite mysterious and uninviting however it concluded the end of a day of exploring ,learning and being intrigued on various different things |
tHe discovery
In todays lesson we were given 12 random photos and were told to create a coercive story with them. These stories had to have a clear and logical beginning ,middle ,end with clear transitions between them. The biggest challenge in my opinion was incorporating the statue of the head. I ended up deciding of a narrative of a man who is at his desk then looks over at his partner's laptop just to see an address. He decides to go to the address only to find his partner's paramour with his partner's head incases in bronze. This narrative was very hard to come up with

a parliment of owls
|
In the lesson today we were given an image without any context and had to make observations about the photo. We later discussed the symbolism of the objects in the photograph, what it could all possibly mean, and the possible choices the photographer deliberately took. I believed after our discussion that this particular photo was about the afterlife and the human ego. I came to these conclusions due to how the photo is divided, the human creation are all scattered on the left of the figure, however, there's only a singular angel statue on her right and it creates this divide between life and death. The side clustered with the man-made creations also reminded me of human deception/ego as we are so obsessed with just ourselves and what we believe that we neglect and destroy the natural beauty surrounding us. I believe that every item in the photo is also there for a specific reason.
Trellis- a trellis is a structure that supports plants as they grow which in my opinion is relevant as it shows how humans have become overly dependent on our creations and how nothing is ever good enough which leads us to grow, clinging onto more of the trellis which is more technology that we become dependant on Sphinx- the sphinx is a lion, human hybrid and it's meant to be mean strength(the lion's body) and intelligence(the human head) which shows how big the human ego is where we believe wholeheartedly that we are the most intelligent creatures and the fact that the sphinx is eye level to the figure shows how humanity has created an enigmatic myth, a symbol of vigor and intellect that we discreetly think we are just as good as Nixon mask- The use of specifically Nixon (the president that escalated the number of American tropes that were sent to Vietnam which led to a riot and a lot of men fleeing America and going to prison because they refused to go to Vietnam and later on in his precedency, the Watergate scandal occurred which he was later impeached for as it was a felon as the mask |
eerie bizarre creepy fantastic frightening ghostly mysterious scary strange supernatural uncanny peculiar
Parliament of owls targets a specific theory that Alex Jones had those elite members of an exclusive club would partake in human sacrifice. All of his images in Parliament of owl have a similar eerie feeling to them despite the vast differences between them. These differences include whether it's a landscape, or portrait, etc if it's horizontal, or landscape, and the way it's captured. These slight differences throughout the entire book paired with the secrets within its printing to create pockets of text and hidden images create another interesting mystery for the viewer to solve along with the original mystery it's set on exploring.
I took these images from the actual parliament of owls book and these images were the ones that interested me the most when I had an actual copy of the book. The first one depicts a man through CCTV footage, and the second one shows a cluster of books and photos and a portrait of a man.
Clocks for seeing
I was determined to do a Latino photographer in this project and at first, I chosen 6:
>Oscar B. Castillo
>Lindsey Nico Mann
>Sofia Aldino
>Carlos Osorio
>Leonardo March
>Cinthya Roura
However, once I had a look at their personal websites and truly analyzed what type of projects they focused on and the type of photography they did I narrowed it down to the 4 in the mind map. Once I had that sorted out I did a tiny bit of research and general categorization of what each artist focused on. I messily put my thoughts and general opinions on the mind map as I was going through each website.

This photographer was definitely one of my favourites among all the ones I researched because I particularly admire how she skillfully manipulates light, color, and composition. It's something I'm eager to experiment with in my own project.
mY COMMUNITY
I decided to photograph my Evangelical Brazilian church. I selected this community because it's where I invest a significant amount of time and energy into it. I've been a part of this church since before I was born, so I'm very familiar with it. I've grown up alongside these people, and they feel like a second family to me. While I may not be religious myself, I've been actively involved and contributing to this community for as long as I can remember.
